The hotel’s fascinating history dates back to the end of the 1800s, when a sea captain named Sebastiano Foti was sailing the Ionian Sea. In the middle of a voyage, the captain’s ship hit a huge storm that threatened to destroy it. Foti prayed to the Madonna and promised that if his life were spared, he would settle down and start a family at the very place where he reached dry land.
As the ship struggled against the elements, tossed on the stormy seas, the captain caught sight of the Capocolonna lighthouse. Battling every inch of the way, the captain and his crew wrestled the ship safely into the Port of Crotone. True to his word, the captain settled in the town and never put to sea again. In the beginning of the 1900s, under the captain’s supervision, building work began on what is now the Palazzo Foti Hotel. The hotel was totally renovated and refurbished in 2006 and now offers modern, elegant 4-star accommodation.
